John Gruber blogging about OpenAI possibly combining all their apps together:
Would it make any sense for Apple to merge Safari, Messages, and Xcode into one “superapp”? No, it would not. It makes no more sense for OpenAI to merge ChatGPT, Codex, and especially Atlas together. I use and very much enjoy ChatGPT because its Mac client is such a good Mac app.
I agree. Part of my concern is that they’ve essentially already combined ChatGPT into Atlas. I thought Atlas 1.0 was cluttered. I’ll try the latest version today to see if it has improved, but it seems like misguided consolidation.
We’ve considered these same issues in Micro.blog. We have so many apps:
- Micro.blog for Mac (AppKit)
- Micro.blog for iOS and Android (React Native)
- Inkwell for Mac (AppKit)
- Inkwell for iOS and Android (coming soon)
- Epilogue for iOS and Android (React Native)
- Strata for iOS and Android (React Native)
- Wavelength for iOS (UIKit)
- Sunlit for iOS (UIKit)
Some customers might prefer a single app. Especially in mobile, though, I think it’s better to have separate apps that can focus on a slice of features. It’s also easier for a third-party to supplement or replace only certain parts of the platform.
