WordPress blogs in Micro.blog

Several months ago I blogged that we wanted to have more integration with WordPress and Ghost in Micro.blog. I’ve now rolled out the first part of that, with an option to add a WordPress blog to Micro.blog’s web interface. New posts and edits sync back and forth between Micro.blog and WordPress.

We’ve already had inbound RSS for WordPress since the first version of Micro.blog. That’s where you can add a WordPress RSS feed and Micro.blog will add your WordPress posts to the timeline, checking your feed regularly for new posts.

That’s not what I’m talking about today. The new feature this week adds more complete blog integration, so you can manage multiple blogs in essentially the same interface. While you’re reading the Micro.blog timeline, you can start a new post that will be sent to WordPress. It supports drafts, categories, and photo uploads. You switch between a Micro.blog and a WordPress blog just as you would switch between multiple Micro.blog-hosted blogs.

WordPress blogs inside Micro.blog are also available from our APIs, like MetaWeblog and Micropub. The long-term goal is for this to be a unified interface that works in all the native apps, supporting the same platforms without each app having its own code for a particular API.

For example, now you can post to WordPress from within Epilogue on iOS and Inkwell on macOS, which wasn’t possible before. After it’s added on the web, WordPress shows up in the blogs list in those apps and other apps, even third party apps like Micro Social.

Expect a couple tweaks as I fine-tune how syncing works with real WordPress blogs. I’ll enable Ghost, Movable Type, and Micropub later. I’m not aware of any bugs, but I still recommend a good blog backup before trying this.
